October 04, 2023 Italy Mission Trip Recap

Written by Communications

The mission work in Sicily continued for a second week this summer as a team led by pastors, Steve Tuck and Dave Bruner, traveled to the city of Catania in July. In partnership with East Cooper’s global partners, Steve and April, and a local Baptist church, this team hosted a camp for local kids. This camp also provided an opportunity for the local pastor to connect with the parents as he hopes to plant a church in this area.

The Olympic-themed Vacation Bible School focused on the countries of Brazil, Italy, and the United States of America. They enjoyed games, crafts, music, and food throughout the week. Each day kicked off with a torch lighting ceremony followed by a song explaining how Jesus is the light of the world. This team enjoyed getting quality time with the kids in small groups and teaching them American sports, like football and baseball. A highlight for Steve from the trip was seeing the relationships that were formed between the children of team members and the local children in Sicily. The Lord provided a sweet unity and oneness of mind in their work. Along with hosting the kids camp, this team had the opportunity to visit a local orphanage where they shared a meal and played games with children. It was a week that created memories for the children and strengthened the faith and community within the East Cooper team.

At the end of the week, the team enjoyed a cookout with the local pastor and a dozen of his unbelieving friends and neighbors. After enjoying a meal together, the pastor boldly and clearly shared the gospel with his friends. “We were amazed by the love for the Lord that was present with our Italian pastor’s family. We really enjoyed the experience and I would encourage others to participate next year,” Dave shared. Since the camp ended, five of the families have reached out to the local pastor and visited his home where he and his wife shared the good news of Jesus with them. Please pray for the growth of the gospel in this community and the potential church plant in the mountains above the city.
